Art One Final Portfolio

1.    Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester? Please explain.
My favorite project this semester was the cartoon skeleton sketch. I really enjoyed the project because I was able to use my imagination and create a good sketch. I also enjoyed this project because I was given an outline/base and from there on I was able to do whatever I wanted to do to make the piece look realistic. After studying the major bones in a human skeleton, I was able to portray the skeleton of Mickey Mouse. I included all the primary bones to make the skeleton of Mickey look as realistic as possible. Considering Mickey has very large hands and feet, it was a little bit different than the human skeleton I was used to drawing. I believe this was my most successful piece, because I was pleased with the finished product, and was able to use my imagination to draw an effective structure. Overall, I think this is my most successful piece because I was able to use my creativity to precisely draw the skeleton and I am pleased with the end result.

2.    Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed the most from? Please explain.
The project I learned and developed the most from was the iPad value study. Not only did I enjoy this project, I also learned skills that I was able to use during projects later during the semester. This unit was very helpful, and I definitely learned a lot from it. We had to do 2 projects involving values, and shading/ blending, and by the end of the second project I was very confident in what I was doing, and how well I was doing it. I also really enjoyed the practice sketches that we did in our sketchbooks, I was able to explore different techniques on how to make the object look better, before doing the final project for that unit. After I learnt the basics of values, everything else was fairly simple. Knowing that the lightest part of the object is where the light source is, and then gradually getting darker, helped me not only during this project, but in future ones as well. I felt that the iPads were much different than the pastels, because the tools in the program were harder to use than actually draw and blend colors together yourself. Even though using the iPads to create values was somewhat difficult, it showed us that there are different ways you can create art. Overall, I think this project taught me a lot about values, which really helped me later on in the semester. It also taught me the purpose of values, and let me experience a different way of creating art.

3.    Choose 1 piece of Art that you used skills and techniques learned from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create the piece.
The project where I skills and techniques from previous projects was the Landscape Painting. When I first started painting, I was nervous because I have never really been able to paint anything and be pleased with the end result. Surprisingly, I really liked how my painting turned out in the end. I felt that the most important part of making this painting was using values. I used this skill from the previous value study. There were lots of values in my painting, especially in the water with the different shades and tints of blue. While painting the water I could not just abruptly change from one color blue, to another. I had to mix and blend the colors together, so that one color would gradually fade into another color. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the way my painting turned out. I especially like the blending of the different blues in the water, which I learnt in a previous unit. I think that by using the values, it made the landscape look more realistic.

4.    Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Please explain.
The project I think was the least important was the contour line shoe drawing. Even though I know that it was supposed to help us learn to draw all aspects of an object, including ridges and wrinkles, instead of a flat, 2- dimesional picture, I felt we spent a lot of time on it. I also think that we emphasized a lot of importance on contour lines. I liked the exercises we did in class that helped us with our contour lines, including the drawings of our hands, because it helped us pay more attention to detail. But, after continous drawings of objects, our hands, and our backpack, without being able to lift your pen, I felt that we had spent a lot of time on it, and I was tired of doing them. Even though it helped us to pay more attention to detail, I didn't use this technique in my pieces of artwork after this.

5.    Choose a piece or artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist. One that you have a personal connection to. Please explain your choice.
My parrot print reflects me as an artist, because I can relate to it at a personal level. Parrots, specifically Macaws are my favorite type of bird. My friend had 2 Macaws and I instantly fell in love with both of them. This print represents me as an artist because of the shades of blue I used. I love using cool colors, so most of my pictures are blue or purple, including this one. Normally, I like using a lot of detail on my pieces. Since, I do a lot of henna tattoos, designs and details are somethings I love to do. The parrot has a lot of details especially on its' face around the eyes, so the focal point of the print was the face. This was my favorite project, other than the landscape painting. I enjoyed researches animals, sketching them, and carving the animals into the linoleum (even though it took forever!). This may not have been my most successful piece, but it reflects who I am as an artist.
